Olympic was the first of three gargantuan sister ships built for the White Star Line for their North Atlantic service. At almost 883 feet and over 45,000 gross tons, she was by far the largest ship in the world when she made her well-publicized debut in June of 1911. On June 1, before her maiden voyage, Olympic called at Liverpool, England, headquarters of White Star, where this picture was taken. She anchored in the River Mersey, dressed with flags from stem to stern, and was briefly thrown open for public inspection. Olympic enjoyed a long and successful career, ending in 1935.
